Go Often

Successful networking is a bit of a numbers game. “Going to as many functions as you can will certainly help you,” Tindall says. “Eventually, people start seeing you. People started coming up to me and saying, ‘I’ve seen you at so many events. Who are you, and what do you do?’”

Start Simple

If you aren’t sure how to strike up a conversation, ease into it—you don’t have to jump into business right away. “If I’m standing in line for a drink and someone next to me picks something I like, I’ll say something like, ‘Man, that’s a great choice,’” Tindall says.

“Maybe they’re wearing a Cardinals shirt. Say something like “I love the Cardinals, too.’ Give a compliment. Everyone loves a compliment.’”

Follow Up, Follow Up, Follow Up

“If you’re going to go out and meet people and make your business by that, don’t fail by not following up,” Tindall says. “Send an email or make a phone call. Send a brief message that says who you are, where you met and how you’d like an opportunity to talk a little more.”
