About This Event

The History Museum on the Square presents Order Up! The Restaurants of Route 66, a new temporary exhibit on display Wednesday, August 3 through Sunday, November 6, 2022. Order Up! is the first of five exhibits being presented annually by the museum as part of The Route 66 Series featuring the history, culture, and impact of Route 66. The Route 66 Series will culminate with the Mother Road’s 100th birthday in 2026.

Not so long ago, Route 66 was the best road to travel between Chicago and Los Angeles. All manner of restaurants were dotted along its two thousand miles, featuring many types of food to satisfy hungry and road-weary travelers.

Order Up! looks back at some of the most popular places to grab a bite to eat in Greene County, Missouri, during the heyday of Route 66. A few of these restaurants are still open while others, such as the elegant dining at the Colonial Hotel, have long since passed into history. Walk down memory lane while exploring old photographs and artifacts from local eateries. The museum encourages visitors to share their own memories and stories of Route 66 restaurants on the exhibit’s talk-back board.

We would like to thank our Series Sponsor O’Reilly Auto Parts and our Order Up! Exhibit Sponsors, AARP Missouri, Ozarks Studies Institute at MSU and J.L. Long Traders.

We hope you will come along for the ride by sharing your stories!
